Making a Powerful Difference to the Gorgon Project

Australian owned and operated power solutions company, MPower, has successfully completed a power plant for the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project.

Making a Powerful Difference to the Gorgon Project

In 2009, MPower secured a $32 million contract to design, manufacture, supply and install a 20MW continuously rated power plant with a SCADA based power management system for the entire gas processing plant on Barrow Island during construction and commissioning phase.

The 12 power packages, created at MPower’s Sydney facility, have been designed to withstand Category 5 cyclones, offer a modular, transportable installation package and also minimise environmental impact on Barrow Island.

MPower Projects managing director Anthony Csillag said the company’s innovative solution drew on its broad intellectual capital and depth.

“Work on the Gorgon Project enabled us to further enhance these strengths and equipped MPower to safely deliver more complex solutions in the international marketplace,’’ Mr Csillag said.

The project also reflected MPower’s commitment to developing skills within the Australian workforce.

“Along with highly qualified Australian electrical, mechanical and control engineers, MPower’s Gorgon Project Team also included apprentices employed in MPower’s Dual Trade Apprenticeship Program and graduate engineers employed in our Graduate Recruitment and Training Program,” Mr Csillag said.

``We’ve implemented a number of youth training initiatives as part of our sustainable growth strategy and the development of our young tradespeople and engineers is particularly rewarding.’’

The Gorgon Project is one of the world's largest natural gas projects and the largest single-resource project in Australia's history. It is operated by Chevron and is a joint venture of the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (approximately 47%), ExxonMobil (25%), Shell (25%), Osaka Gas (1.25%), Tokyo Gas (1%) and Chubu Electric Power (0.417%).
